Despite the widespread knowledge about the dangers of tobacco use, nearly 16% of American continue to smoke cigarettes. 38 million Americans smoke cigarettes daily. World wide the number balloons to the 1.1 Billion people.
The horrifying part of nicotine is that almost everyone who smokes knows the dangers of smoking. According to the Center for Disease Control, “Research suggests that nicotine may be as addictive as heroin, cocaine, or alcohol”.
The CDC further reports that 7 out of 10 people want to quit smoking completely and nearly half try to quit every year. Most of these attempts fail.
Some smokers try to use nicotine vaporizers to quit. New research shows these vaporizers have no impact on decreasing the societal dependence on cigarettes(2). If anything, “the devices actually may have suppressed or delayed quitting among some adult smokers”.
As CBD gains in popularity for its anti-pain and anti-anxiety properties, smokers are finding CBD may critical to helping them finally quit nicotine. In 2013, the Dr. CJ Morgan at the University of London conducted an experiment with nicotine usage and CBD (3). The study found, “those treated with CBD significantly reduced the number of cigarettes smoked by ~40% during treatment” while “placebo treated smokers showed no differences in number of cigarettes smoked”.
Although more research is needed to fully confirm and understand why, the current hypothesis is that CBD helps break reward cycles in the brain helping it disassociate the reward of smoking with the act itself. Breaking these feedback loops helps reduce cravings and obsession with constant nicotine consumption.
Ultimately, CBD may be a new and exciting tool to help save some of the 480,000 Americans a year that die from tobacco related causes.
